Keyboard basics
Tooee uses modal navigation like Vim. Learn the modes, keys, and commands.
Every Tooee screen runs in one of three modes. The status bar at the bottom shows the current mode as Mode:. View shows it at the right edge, and Ask shows it first.
| Mode | What keys do | How you get there |
|---|---|---|
| cursor | Keys run commands: move, search, copy, quit. | The default in View. Escape returns here from the other two modes. |
| insert | Keys type into an input: the search bar, the Choose filter, or the Ask editor. | In View, only inputs such as search. Ask and Choose start here, and a or i returns to it. |
| select | j and k extend a row range for copy. | v in View. |
Move
In cursor mode the cursor is the highlighted row.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
j | Cursor down |
k | Cursor up |
ctrl+d | Half page down |
ctrl+u | Half page up |
g g | Top |
G | Bottom |
g g is a sequence: press g twice. After the first g, a hint bar lists the keys that complete the sequence. The same bar appears after y.
After you scroll with the mouse wheel, g g and G scroll the first or last row back into view, also when the cursor is already on it.
Click a row to move the cursor there. Drag with the mouse to select text; on Linux, Tooee copies the dragged text to the primary selection.
Search
| Key | Mode | Action |
|---|---|---|
/ | cursor | Open the search bar and switch to insert mode |
Enter | insert | Run the search and return to the previous mode |
n | cursor | Next match |
N | cursor | Previous match |
Escape | any | Clear the search |
Matches are highlighted in the rows. While a search is open, the search bar takes the place of the status bar and shows the query and the match count.
Fold and outline
Markdown in View adds these keys in cursor mode:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
z a | Open or close the fold at the cursor |
z c, z o | Close or open the fold at the cursor |
z z | Open the fold at the cursor when it is closed, else close it |
z M, z R | Close or open all folds |
g o | Open the heading outline and move into it, or close it from inside |
A fold hides the blocks under a heading. View covers folds and the keys inside the outline.
Select and copy
| Key | Mode | Action |
|---|---|---|
v | cursor | Start a selection at the cursor |
j, k | select | Extend the selection |
Tab | cursor, select | Toggle the cursor row in a multi-row pick |
Shift+Tab | cursor | Toggle the cursor row and move up |
Escape | select | Cancel the selection |
y y | cursor, select | Copy the cursor row |
y v | cursor, select | Copy the selection or the toggled rows, then return to cursor mode |
y g | cursor, select | Copy the whole document |
y g comes from View and Ask. A custom document has it when the app registers useCopyCommand; Documents covers that. A toast confirms each copy. Copy uses the clipboard tool of your platform; Troubleshooting lists the tools Tooee looks for.
Commands and the palette
: opens the command palette in cursor or select mode. It lists the commands for the current mode with their hotkeys. Type to filter, move with up and down, press Enter to run the highlighted command, or Escape to close.
Apps add commands of their own. A hotkey is a single key such as q, a chord such as ctrl+d, or a sequence such as g g. Configuration shows how to remap them.
Themes
t opens the theme picker. Type to filter, move with up and down, and the screen previews each theme as you move. Enter keeps the theme and saves it to ~/.config/tooee/config.json. Escape restores the theme you started with. Tooee bundles 34 themes; Themes lists them.
Quit
q quits in cursor mode. ctrl+c quits in any mode. In Ask and Choose, q in cursor mode cancels the prompt.
ctrl+shift+j toggles the OpenTUI debug console.
